Technology
Raw digital video data needs compression technique for transmission and storage as the file size is usually huge. Many important video compression standards had therefore been established such as ISO/IEC MPEG-1, MPEG-4 standards and the ITU-T H.261, H.263, H.264 standards. In most video compression standards such as MPEG-1/2/4 and H.261.3.4, the main concern is motion estimation. Good estimation will improve the compression efficiency, subjective video quality and coding speed of a video coding system. A fast block based motion estimation algorithm called e-PMVFAST, and a novel modification to sub-pixel motion estimation and compensation are invented. The technique can achieve extremely high speed up comparing with other existing fast motion estimation algorithms while maintaining similar quality comparing with full search algorithm. Moreover, its motion vector field is also significantly smoother than other algorithms. This invention can be used in video encoders involving motion estimation which is used in many international standards including the MPEG-1/2/4 and H.261.3.4.
