Technology
The present invention concerns a bacterial product with antifouling properties against larvae of dominant marine fouling invertebrates. The bacterium has been isolated from the sediment sample from deep sea by enrichment techniques and was identified based on comparative analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences as Streptomyces fungicidicus. In suspension culture this bacterium releases a bioactive compound, which has been purified by bioassay-guided HPLC isolation and was identified as genistein by NMR and MS techniques. And in both bioassays in lab and field test, genistein exhibits prominent antifouling activity against larvae of the barnacle Balanus amphitrite, which have been recognized as one of fouling organisms on global scale. The antifouling effect has been demonstrated to be non-toxic to the target organisms and is reversible in the absence of the agent. The present invention also concerns 6 active flavone or isoflavone derivatives, both which and genistein possess three structural characters: 1) with a 5-OH; 2) without 3-OH; 3) without the voluminous groups on C3. The similar prominent antifouling activities and non-toxicity as genistein of these 6 compounds were also proved. These 6 compounds are 3',5-dihydroxyl-3,6,7,8-tetramethoxy-flavone (calycopterin), 3',5-dihydroxyl -3,4',6,7-tetramethoxy-flavone (casticin), 4',5-dihydroxy-3,6,7-trimethoxy-flavone, 4',5,7-trihydroxy-flavone (apigenin), 3',4',5,7-tetramethoxy-flavone (luteolin), and 5-monohydroxyl- flavone (primuletin).

2. Possibility of mass production in land-based fermenters
