Technology
This invention relates to methodology for fabricating magnetically-functionalized core-shell elastic microspheres and drug loaded microspheres by using the microfluidic flow-focusing (MFF) approach and its apparatus thereof. The shell of each microsphere is embedded with magnetic nanoparticles, thereby enabling the microspheres to deform under an applied magnetic field. By encapsulating drug, e.g., aspirin or amoxicillin inside the microspheres, the applications of such microspheres in "Smart" Drug Delivery and the enhanced drug release under the compression-extension oscillations of the microspheres induced by an AC magnetic field can be realized. This active pumping mode of drug release can be controlled by varying the frequency and magnitude of applied magnetic field, as well as magnetic field!|s time profile. Other potential applications for core-shell microspheres like controllable elastomer ball array, magnetic actuated adhesive and single spherical micro-damper can also be realized.
